Low Income Health Care Card


As an Australian Apprentice you may be eligible for extra Government financial assistance to help you succeed and make the most of your apprenticeship / traineeship. These include:

  • Trade Support Loan
  • Living Away From Home Allowance
  • Youth Allowance, Abstudy and Austudy

Low Income Health Care Card

​You may be eligible for a Low Income Health Care Card if you are on a low income and meet the Low Income Health Care Card income test. If you are a student or Australian Apprentice and receive Youth Allowance, ABSTUDY or Austudy, you will not automatically receive a Health Care Card but may still qualify for a Low Income Health Care Card.

The card gives low income earners access to cheaper prescription medicines, and various concessions from government and private organisations.

Wages and Conditions

Wages and conditions for apprenticeships and traineeships vary. As a minimum, you must be paid a training wage as outlined in the award or agreement for your occupation or industry. The wage you are paid will depend on your apprenticeship or traineeship and the progress you make.
